MMM i wonder what/who influenced the Wachowski Brothers' when they made the MATRIX?
Star Wars (Wich in turn as Ditto points out is a carbon copy of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic Seven Samurai, wich happens to be one of my all time fav films.. awersome.. cinema at it's best)
Ghost in The Shell (<<----MAIN influence bar none, there are so many ideas and scenes, [The whole rooftop chase scene in the beginning] completly ripped from it.. saving Grace the wazkko bros.. openly cite it as a main influence.. I mean.. they can escape it can they....)
Dark City (<<--Nearly 95% of the Matrix is modelled around that movie, the one of the only difference is mainly the idea of the matrix as oppossed to Dark City's "Sleep" idea. Dynamics of the film is almost identical as is nearly all the cinematography, tone, atmospherics, set's, wardrobe, I kid you not, wath both movies Dark City first then immediatly wacth the Matrix... they are so similar it's scary)
Fist Of Legend (Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury remake starring Jet Li, serves as the blue print for all the action sequences)
Stalker (Ideas of a power that turns your dreams into reality is interwoven in the Matrix, as in what you choose or dream to believe may not be what you get.... Steve Sodenrebourgh also used this in his George Clooney star vehicle "Solaris", wich in turn was a remake of a film by the Russian director, Andrei Tarkovsky, as an attempt to make Stalker more accesable and easily definable,(Tarkovsky also wrote and directed Stalker) Tarkovsky remade Stalker again as "The Sacrifice" but gave it an autobiographical spin, basing the structure of events around his turbulant life and it's problably one of his better films, utterly, ackingly beutifull to look at, complex and a mind expanding experience, it was his last film)
Metropolis (Fritz Lang,s devastating masterwork, an incredible film made in the 1930's... absolutely mind bending masterpiece, second to none... serves as a major catalyst for the Matrix... the whole idea of an industrialized society and the price it pays for it's comforts, in exchange for the human spirit)
The point is; there is very little ORIGINALATY in Hollywood, the propaganda machine is creates would have you believe that ONLY Hollywwood makes films, that is NOT the fucking case, Hollywwod are motherfucking bucthers and thiefs of the highest degree.
In hollywood Orson Wells, was ONE of the ONLY true orginal geniuses of film, hardly a film goes past (from Hollywwod), that does NOT draw something from the work of Orson Wells... just rent out Citizen Kane.. and tell me I'm wrong.
Of course they have been many great films by Hollywood, not saying that, what Im saying that out of 100, only one is truly original.. and they usally come in time spans of decades, (Raging Bull from the 80's, The Conversation from the 70's, etc.... you get the picture... personal taste has nothing to do with quality.....
The Matrix at best is hackered down, and dummbed up for the American audience that by and large refuse anything cerebral.... the whole concept of the ORACLE, was forced of the Wazkocky bros by Warner, cause they felt the film was too.. high brow.... too much thinking... can we please have an ideological dumb meter.. ta.....
Now, I like the Matrix a LOT, I think it's a dead set kick arse fiml, but it's NOT a great film... it has inovative (To a degree, wacth Ghost in the Shell) FX, but that don't make the movie... it's pretty dumb..... it could of been utterly great, maybe even a master work, has it been made for the Arthouse circuit and not cost 80 million to make...
Interesting point is... the next two matrix films... many critics site the fact, that the wazkocky bros.. ran out of ideas cause none of their main influences had sequels.. lolol... i would agree with that.. lololol
Ohhh and I LOVE Starwars... ffs.. I saw it wen i was 11 years old at my local small town cinema... and it took me days to pick up my jaw... it left impressions on me that i will never forget.... that and Mad Max... ffs.. Max has a lot to answer for in my twisted little mind... grrrrr....
