I was browsing around the UnrealNorth forums today and came across this thread where cristal let loose some tips about compression for a vid.

Cristal has made some awesome movies that have had amazing video quality with very small (considering) file sizes.

Heres the thread; http://www.unrealnorth.com/forum.php?ac ... c&id=12764

Might wanna have a look at it gammo and 2k for your movies maybe. I thought it was information that was good to know whether anyone uses it or not.

This is the link to cristal's latest movie for the UnrealNorth community. Theres links to both the x264 compressed version and XviD version. The quality is brilliant for the XviD version and apparently the x264 is very good also and is about 100mb smaller.

I was curious for more information relating to codecs and what is the best one, but from outside of the community, so to speak,

Anyone got any links to good discussions of codedc use?

x264 is NOT as good or as reliable as the MPEG4 format, that has been correctly configured. The output is far sharper and smoother, while the file size maybe a bit bigger the price is worth the effort.

I havent really looked into the whole compression thing for a while now since I found that topic up the top there. But www.own-age.com has a fair few topics on compression, and there's that unrealnorth website thats pretty heavily into the frag movies but theyre both UT community websites.

If youre really interested in reading more gammo try starting here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_codec

And just keep clicking on all the See also stuff on each page, I got lost after 5 mins of reading through because theres just so much info. Ill have a look around for some actual discussion on it all too.

Hope it helps.

Have any of you tried encoding in x264?

I gave it a go and the output was horrible, colors were all off and quality was crap (blocky) - nothing like Unrealnorth or Get Quaked 3. Gotta be something wrong with my settings or version of the codec but I haven't got it figured out yet.

More to the point, has anyone got linkage to an idiots guide to x264 encoding? I'm on a mission to find out more - I think this codec has great potential.

Actually Gammo, could I get your recipe for MPEG4v3 encoding please?

Tried his XviD and x264 suggestions and both work well. I'll probably spend more time on x264 me thinks...

The brightness/contrast and gamma ramp always end up way off the original tho. Dunno why. Might just have to manually fiddle with the original dumpframed bmps to reach a happy medium.
