how are you o/c your pc?

Oh wow thats a fair few problems. Your best bet right now would be to revert back to all your original settings for now, just so you can make sure everythings still fine.
When I was ocing I had a similar problem with the moniter in that it wouldnt swith off of standby when I turned the computer on, all I did with that is unplug the monitor for a couple of mins then hook everything up and it'd work.
How are you ocing? are you using a third-party program? or doing it directly through your BIOS?
Also what are you computer specs? Such as motherboard, processor, RAM? Better to give actual brand names as well rather then their raw specs.
Also, I highly recommend you read through this tutorial on ocing and understand it (I read through it 3 or 4 times before I started anything, then a load more while I was actaully doing the ocing)

well o/c done thru bios by my "friend" who builds custom pc's for gamers etc
this happened with my old gfx card & old monitor but cos there was so many other issues, i avoided mentioning this one to my friend = only cos he talks to me as tho i am stupid (which i am not) cos he gets angered by others & takes it out on me
anyhow i have asus P4 c 800 motherboard
think it normally runs at 2.3 & is o/c to 2.8
i dont wanna set back to default setings cos that takes everything back & then i get performance issues that are intolerable
i will take it back to him in the weekend & get the o/c taken out methinks
mainly concerned doing damage if i dont reset to defaults but have made few enquiries today & seems to be no major but advisable to remove o/c asap
does that sound right?
and geez guys, i might have balls but no way will i attempt o/c myself, yet anyway
thanx heaps for ur advices & recommendations
& MaianO, nice to know its not just me these things happen to
BTW

cpu fan failed = not good
you can fry yor cpu some motherboards have a tempreture cut off setting in bios set it on 60 or 70 max.

ok oc that high with just the standard HSF cooling solution is really not advisable.
Your main problem is most definately heat related...u need to cool that son bitch down!!!
Also u may need to increase the cpu voltage as it may not be getting enough juice but i certainly would not recomend doing that till u get a decent cooling solution going......
Zalman Copper copper cooler about 60bukAU does the job nicely and is a sinch to install.

well if jOOs cud see my pc u would know that its a fucken steam engine when its on cos it has so many fans! even has a "blow hole fan" on top of the case
still maybe they need to be reassessed so ty for ur advices
i recently got new gfx = GT 6600
is it possible that this has pushed the cpu/mobo to the limit?
i know i cant get any higher spec gfx to run on this mobo (tried the GS 7800 but wud not take the agp - MaianO had same problem)
hmm maybe my mission of getting new cpu & mobo has advanced & i need it now!
wtf . . . only money
so . . . think gfx pushing cpu & mobo to limit?
i dont do the actaul work on my pc myself but i am trying to understand it all
ffs i dont even know how to change a gfx or slot in new ram . . . hows that for a gamer

sometimes the best way to learn is to take a stab in the dark....it worked for me. Actually everything i know regarding computers and their working i have taught myself - the best way to learn - but consequentially i have gone through the following:
2 gfx cards
1 monitor
1 mouse
1 keyboard
1 speaker set
2 hdd
1 psu
1 stick of 512 ram
Costly mistakes, but i now have a good understanding of how it all works because of them. Actually the keyboard i went through because i threw it across the room, and i threw the mouse at my brother, so technically they r still mistakes lol.
Lessons learned:
- U can't force a ram stick in the wrong way
- Gfx cards need cleaning so that the fan dosen't stop working because there is so much dust
- don't drop hdd (especially down stairs)
- stick with western digital when buying hdd (or other brand beside fireball)
- kicking a monitor is not good
- there is more than one type of gfx card connection
- dodgy psu's tend to blow up and start smoking in ur case
- accidentally cutting the speaker cables may affect their performance
of course i was only young when i made these mistakes, but as a result i am all the more wiser (and cautious) now.
So go for it, the worst that could happen is u blow up an important and expensive part of ur machine, leaving u with no computer or online connection for at least a week. As u said; wtf....only money

Jeez Acer thats a VERY expensive way to learn...but hey each to their own I guess.
I think if your gfx card had pushed your motherboard to the limit it wouldnt even work, ie like your 6800GS, so I dont think thats a problem. I think Disko might be on the right track with the cpu voltage though...even a slight adjustment can be the difference between a stable OC and an unstable one.
Try running this program, its a free tool;
http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm
On that page go to "Step 1" and download the p95v2414.exe(1.1MBhttp)
After you install it go "Options > Torture Test" and select the Blend option which tests all aspects of the comp for faults.
Basically what this program does is test it for stability by performing and infinte loop of mathematical iterations. The guy that did your computer should have already done this himself, but if your having these problems then maybe he didnt. If you can have it run for 8-12 hours without it stopping or posting errors, then your OC is stable and your problems are coming from somewhere else. But at this point Id seriously doubt its anyting but your new OC...but its best to check. If its major the program will stop in the first 30 mins or so anyway....like mine did after 3 mins lol...fixed it but, can run it all day now without any probs.
Otherwise just give your comp back to the guy and get him to have a better looks at it and maybe pull back a bit on the OC, cause 500MHz is quite a big leap. I only OC'd my 3200+ by 300MHz which I did without having to change any memory timings or voltages. If I did I reckon I coulda got another 300MHz out of it, but It was a lot safer to stick at the 300MHz mark.

ok matey i shall do that test
i let u know
strange thing is several benchmarking proggies run on it for 2 days with no problem thats why i wondered whether new gfx did something
fuck its prolly something simple like a fan - usually if they make a loud noise outta ordinary i just "kick" the case & it stops
i do an asus probe methinks (sounds rude dont it?)
u lot have been incredibly helpful & kind
thank you all
edit: well ran probe and u lot r right
both the cpu & chassis fans r below threshold
but temp still okay @ 41 - a little increase but not significant (usually runs bout 37)
fuck i hate computers!

Well, u could always ditch ur computer and go back to the old days

...maybe if ur lucky they'll bring out a UT2004 boardgame, or a pen & paper version.....

Supposing that nothing is defective (cpu, mobo, ram),
check in the bios (if you can go there) if the fsb is set at the right speed
(533 i.s. of 800). If you can't go into the bios, clear the cmos by changing
the appropriate jumpers (see your manual) or by removing the battery for a
minute.
