Upgrading my CPU

I am in the market for some sort of upgrade to my PC. I am very confused at all the new cpu's coming out, and how they will need to be catered for. I would like some comments on my following logic.
I have a 478 socket motherboard with a P4 2.4ghz, also an x800 AGP vid card. As I mostly want to use the maching to game, I wasn't too fused with Dual core nonsense and thought. So to upgrade, I thought my best bang for my buck would be to simply upgrade my cpu to a P4 478 3.4ghz chip (fastest I can go with this motherboard) thus I wouldn't have to get a new motherboard. Keep in mind, if I want to upgrade my motherboard, I would want to get one that is SLi ready, ready for my vid card upgrade in 2 years.
However, I have been thinking, if I get myself a nice new motheboard which would fit a 775 socket p4 3.4ghz cpu, would this also fit the new dual core cpu's coming out in ther near future, ie:
Pentium D 775 (I believe this is a dual core)
intel Core Duo 775 (is this faster than pentium d?)
Intel Core 2 Duo 775
Or do I have to get a new motherboard that supports these chips each time I want an new chip "architecture" for lack of a better word?
So in summary, I guess the main questions are these:
0.5 Comments appreciated on my initial upgrade thoughts.
1. if I get a new 775 socket motherboard and wakk a P4 3.4ghz cpu in it, will I later be able to wakk a Intel Core 2 Duo in it down the track?
2. Is the intel core duo better for gaming than the Pentium D?
3. Is the Intel Core 2 Duo the conroe chip everyone is blowing thier front end loaders over?
Any kAoTis advice and thoughts would be appreciated. (don't tell me to go to AMD, cuase I aint familiar with them.
