The Editors Choice Edition
So - hold on to your hats as another wave of completed modifications, mutators, models and maps hits your PC as you either invest in UT2004 Editors Choice Edition (if you don't already own a copy of UT2004 - although we would wonder why you don't!), or download the updates from the web if you already own a copy (unless, like me, you like shiney new boxes and things!). Many of the modifications scheduled to be included have been announced:
- Unwheel - Racing, Rallying and Stunts in this 4-wheeled mod.
- Jailbreak - a UT99 classic, keep your team out of jail while fragging your enemy into jail!
- Frag-Ops - set in a world of privatised security services and high unemployment!
- Domain 2049 - be part of the control or the rebellion in this totalitarian world.
- Deathball - classic mod combining sheild gun and movement with soccer skills.
- Alien Swarm - an overhead view tactical squad-based shooter set in the future with new weapons and truly cooperative gameplay.
- Red Orchestra - classic WWII action with realistic weapons and amazing ambience.
- Chaos UT - 18 new and chaotic weapons, effects and relics for your delight!
- Clone Bandits - a total conversion with some of the funkiest vehicle and off-the-wall design work I have seen - oh, and great gameplay too!
- Air Buccaniers - Pirates, hot air balloons and cannons in this total conversion for UT2004.
In addition, there is the promise of three new vehicles - the Cicada, a two seat air vehicle; the Paladin, a deadly new tank that includes a player-oriented directional shield; and the Self Propelled Mobile Artillery (SPMA), a long-range artillery vehicle with a deployable hovering spotter camera.
AND six new characters, crafted with love and attention by Epic will join the ranks including two MetalGuard mercenaries, two Mecha Skaarj and two of the ever popular Necris characters.
Conclusion
So, UT2004 - Lame Duck or a true market leader. Given that since the release of the game, there are over 10 new gametypes available through the community. The upcoming and downloadable Editors Choice Edition looks set to take UT2004 to the next level - perhaps offering too much choice for a single gamer in a single game. One thing is for sure, however - UT2004 has proven to be exceptional value for money, and looks set to continue this into the near future.
