Upgrading my CPU

Post by kAoS-Wakko »

kAoS

I am in the market for some sort of upgrade to my PC. I am very confused at all the new cpu's coming out, and how they will need to be catered for. I would like some comments on my following logic.

I have a 478 socket motherboard with a P4 2.4ghz, also an x800 AGP vid card. As I mostly want to use the maching to game, I wasn't too fused with Dual core nonsense and thought. So to upgrade, I thought my best bang for my buck would be to simply upgrade my cpu to a P4 478 3.4ghz chip (fastest I can go with this motherboard) thus I wouldn't have to get a new motherboard. Keep in mind, if I want to upgrade my motherboard, I would want to get one that is SLi ready, ready for my vid card upgrade in 2 years.

However, I have been thinking, if I get myself a nice new motheboard which would fit a 775 socket p4 3.4ghz cpu, would this also fit the new dual core cpu's coming out in ther near future, ie:

Pentium D 775 (I believe this is a dual core)
intel Core Duo 775 (is this faster than pentium d?)
Intel Core 2 Duo 775

Or do I have to get a new motherboard that supports these chips each time I want an new chip "architecture" for lack of a better word?

So in summary, I guess the main questions are these:

0.5 Comments appreciated on my initial upgrade thoughts.
1. if I get a new 775 socket motherboard and wakk a P4 3.4ghz cpu in it, will I later be able to wakk a Intel Core 2 Duo in it down the track?
2. Is the intel core duo better for gaming than the Pentium D?
3. Is the Intel Core 2 Duo the conroe chip everyone is blowing thier front end loaders over?

Any kAoTis advice and thoughts would be appreciated. (don't tell me to go to AMD, cuase I aint familiar with them.

heard the core cpu is pretty decent......but isnt compatible with any other chips (as ALWAYS) so mobo upgrade will b mandatory ::booHoo::

apart from that i gotta do some reserch.......but i dont know why you write off AMD i know u dont know them well....but that ISNT a valid argument.
im sayin go tha whole hog and get ddr2 an all that jazz.

BTW. intel BLOWS ::ns::

1. ($300) OK, the way I see it so far. For $300 AUS I get an extra 1ghz by getting the 3,4ghz. Games are Ghz hungry so I see this as a good shortterm solutionm, unless I get a dual core over 3,4ghz, which will cost $500 alone, and not help my game anyway.

2. (>$500)They other way I can go, is dual core. This means I gotta get another MOBO, which means I have to get a AGP mobo to keep using my x800pro (which can be flashed to x800XT), which will only last me one upgrade session. So a new MOBO will at least cost $100, an new CPU $300-400.

3. (>$1000) 3rd option, I get a new MOBO that supports PCIx, DDR2, intel conroe dual. Cost = fuck that.

ANything other than option one will see me get an upgrade that starts to cost over my $0.00 budget. If I perhapos go with option 1 and stay with it for a year, then after a year, all of it will be shithouse, and then IU can upgrade the lot!

Fucking progress!

Hender, I will have a Antec Smart Power 450 24 pin on sunday.

Last things first:

How do I know that the E6300 Conrow will be faster for single threaded game like Battlefield, UT2004, UT2007, FarCry, than the 3.4ghz P4?

First things last:

Land Ahoy! Of course! Now that I have entertained the thought of a Conroe, I have done some research and have found out that I could possible get the conroe chip E6300 for AUS$298.00. Of course this means that I would have to get a new motherboard...but again! Land Ahoy, I have found a MOBO that supports my AGP card, (as well as PCI x16 for the future) it also supports my old DDR ram, ( aslo DDR2 for future as well) and all this for only AUS$80.

So instead of getting a P4 3.4ghz fire hazard, I would be better of going for the Asrock 775Dual-VSTA with Conroe Chip (When it comes out), considering the conroe will be single threaded speed machine.
