Splitting a DSL connection
I know ACER will be interested in this too.
Does anyone know of a way to split a ADSL connection? My wife surf and downlaods shit when I am playing, and I need a way to limit her bandwidth. Does anyone know if this can be done?
Hardware or software solution would be good.

Re: Splitting a DSL connection
Software should suffice as long as long as your modem was made this century:
(i.e no steam powered modems)
I'd imagine you just need to set an allotted bandwidth amount for each IP address.
Here's a list of software, the first is rumoured to work well, but it's only 30 day trial.
You should find one that works for you:

Bandwidth Controller - sets a hard cap on the nic
(rx & tx control +ip source and dest / protocol control)
www.bandwidthcontroller.com/index.html
(My favorite at the moment)
Net Limiter - puts a limit on a -per- program basis
(rx & tx control)
www.netlimiter.com
CFOS software - performs QOS types of prioritising
(packet sheduling and bandwidth shaping)
(note : I have nto used this software myself - feedback PLZ)
www.cfos.de/index2_e.html
Net Peeker - puts a limit on a -per- program basis
(note : I have not used this software myself - feedback PLZ)
www.net-peeker.com
Webscout - allows filtering of content and b/w / useage (mb) restrictions
-also allows file type / page blocking and individual user managment
www.globalpatrol.net/webscout
Shunra Nimbus - sets a hard cap on the nic (this program is FREE)
(bi-directional cap - no rx / tx control)
www.angelfire.com/oz/shunra/Nimbus.exe
(if someone else has a better link for nimbus - let me know)
(ONLY WORKS WITH NT/XP)
Internet Gateway Monitor (IGM)
For win32 clients an app for helping monitor your network's traffic
(but not shape or control) : studiocoast.com/igm.asp
There are more win32 solutions -BUT- myself and others have not been able to successfully implement them on our systems.
Linux/Unix/BSD users, a few to try :
Clark Connect : www.clarkconnect.org/info/1.2.html
Linux Advanced Routing and Traffic Control guide : lartc.org
The "Wonder Shaper" script : lartc.org/wondershaper
BSD : www.benzedrine.cx/ackpri.html
(Note altq and pf have been in OpenBSD for sometime but you'll need to upgrade to 3.3 to get the benefits of the merged config file - Know1)

Re: Splitting a DSL connection
Yeah, i would be much interested! my broadband is split between 3 ppl - effectively meaning that my gaming experience is often very laggy.
Prob is wakko that i can't really limit my bro, cause the whole purpose of havin our internet run through the network i set up is so that him n I can both play at the same time.
Apparently, our area is eligible for ADSL2 - which would give considerably faster connection speeds, which might be an option.
Still, software that can limit the bandwidth of the 3rd computer would be good, or even better still software that prioritises the packet schedueling of games above all other programs (similar to the wireless gaming router hender has got) would be great!

WHAT WHAT WHAT?
WHat router hender has? How does he prioritise packets?
I know there are modems out there that can prioritise signal, and can limit bandwidth:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-re ... m?t=854626
But ones that prioritises PACKETS? AWSOME! Hender do tell. Tell us all a fucking bout it!

Can't find his original post but it linked to this info page ---> http://games.dlink.com/products/?pid=370&.
Apparently it dropped his ping by bout 20. Best to ask hender himself.

Re: Splitting a DSL connection
Cool eh? God knows i could've used that technology in the last 3 years...
If anyone knows of any software that is capable of achieving similar results i would be willing to marry u. ::hubbaBubba::
btw dru, the 4300 is wireless - the one ur getting, the 4100, is that not wireless? cause if its not wireless, then i think i would be very much inclined to get one too....

Re: Splitting a DSL connection
wakko priv messaged me on the same topic. i replied before seeing this post - here is my reply:
hey dude,
it (dlink gamer lounge) helped heeps with my ping, dropped it by 20. and yes it helped a little with my gf downloading but it can still spike to 200ping when i had the old dlink 502t adsl router.
i bought a billion adsl router from umart for about $109 and it dropped my ping another 20 but my gf could only spike me to 100-150ping
so... i changed internet connection to internode (yep, internode) for $59 a month up to 24mb connection (i get about 10mb connection as im far from the exchange) 20gig dl and 800kbs upload and i have not noticed her checkin emails, downloading etc
therefore... dlink gamerlounge, billion adsl router and mother f@#ker internet connection is all i needed

Re: Splitting a DSL connection
Thanks hender.
I will order a Billion Modem/ROuter wil QoS and limit and prioritse my network. If that don't work, then I will upgrade my plan.
Question, do you find good pings on ADSL2? I hear there is a 20 ping increase going from ADSL to ADSL2.
Anyone else here have ADSL2?

Re: Splitting a DSL connection
I've been considering getting adsl2 because of the increased download speed, and the rumoured drop in ping, which would make online gaming for me much sexier...
Yeah, i haven't heard anything good about wireless either dru, thats why i was asking if the 4100 was not wireless, casue a wireless router just wouldn't work in my house, too much interference... infact, i don't think a wireless router really works anywhere, unless u've weilded it onto the side of ur pc tower.....
Hey hender, what was it that was different between ur original adsl router n the billion one that caused such a dramatic drop in latency?

the billion is australian made... i went for the billion after it blitzed anything in its path in a review "apc juneish 06" all of its modems came out trumps and rightly so.
another thing u can look at is using an old pc with two nics and putting linix on it. there is so many awesome shaping software out there for linix routers. give yourself 80% and the rest 20% internet
it is teh dlink gamerlounge that has the "shaping" built into it, but its not very powerfull for advanced users like us. just make sure u update teh firmware, turn gamefuel on, select ut2004 to port to ur computer and thats all u can do to help ut not ping out

Re: Splitting a DSL connection
I've got a Billion 7402VL ADSL 2+ modem with VOIP. I'm also on a ADSL 2+ plan.
The modem supports QOS for numerous things but I've only got it set to give VOIP priority when someone wants to use the phone.
I've had 4 people sharing this modem, downloading, browsing, listening to music with me playing games and the ping and gameplay was fine. I haven't bothered making any other QOS adjustments - seems to work great as is.
